History is most often told through either literature or the moving image.  We believe that this story is unique and widely unfamiliar to most of the world.  There is a great desire for stories about strong and powerful women who created change.  As we all know, the Christian Science Monitor, founded by Mary Baker Eddy, is one of the most important papers in the world and judging from the success of the films such as The Post, there is a great appetite for films like this.

Sometimes Beautiful...

Sometimes Beautiful is the story of Senator William Chandler’s (protegee of Abraham Lincoln), persecution of Mary Baker Eddy, the richest and
second most famous woman in the world after the Queen of England at the beginning of the Twentieth Century.
Many people including Mark Twain have been obsessed with Mary Baker Eddy and what she was able to accomplish as a sickly, middle aged, abandoned and poverty stricken woman in the male dominated eighteen hundreds.  Our story starts in New England in 1909 during another one of its infamous witch hunts but instead of burning her, they are bringing Mary Baker Eddy to trial claiming that she isn't fit to run her own business.  Senator William Chandler wants to have her declared mentally unstable and make her a ward of her illiterate, itinerant and estranged son George Washington Glover.
Mary Baker Eddy is a problem for the typical 19th Century man.  She is a strong independent woman who grew up on a farm during the harsh
New England winters.  Being bed ridden by her weak constitution she self educated by reading voraciously. She came from a very strict Calvinist upbringing where she gained the roots of her faith.  She was widowed at an early age and her son was taken away from her due to her
inability to support him financially or physically.  She spent her early life trying to regain custody of her son by marrying a philandering dentist
who abandoned her and left her penniless.

William Chandler is the tragic idealist, he grew up with the promise of a free America with equality for all. He idolized Lincoln and prefers the past often reliving it through his charming second wife Lucy.  Lucy was the daughter of Senator John P. Hale, the strongest abolitionist in the Senate. She was beloved by Lincoln’s son and was secretly engaged to his killer, John Wilkes Booth. Even though she married Chandler in her spinsterhood, she has never gotten over her love for Booth.   When we meet her she is in the early stages of dementia, however she is pulled into her husband’s obsession with Mary Baker Eddy. Through her friendship with Abraham Lincoln’s daughter-in-law, who is a follower,  she becomes quite fascinated with Mary Baker Eddy.
William Chandler is asked by the infamous Joseph Pulitzer, the Newspaper magnet, to put together a case against Mary Baker Eddy. Chandler
tracks down her son George Washington Glover who has a deep love for his mother, and convinces him to bring her to trial.  There is
some doubt about whether Ms Eddy is still alive but once that is resolved, a trial is set in motion.   Against all odds she prevails.
